Being an advocate for your child means asking questions and staying informed about their language development. Use this toolkit to prepare for English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings and parent-teacher conferences.

 

 

💬 Advocacy Sentence Starters

Use these phrases to start a conversation with your child's teachers or school administrators:

  • "How is my child progressing toward reclassification?"
  • "What specific supports is my child receiving in their core classes (Math, Science, History)?"
  • "What was my child's most recent ELPAC score, and what does it mean for their placement?"
  • "In which area—reading, writing, speaking, or listening—does my child need the most practice?"
  • "How can I support my child's academic vocabulary development at home?"
